Oil And Water Do Not Mix !

January 27, 2010

Recently I read an article online about adding water to fragrance oils to make your reed diffuser oils last longer.  The misinformation out there drives me crazy sometimes.

First- oil and water do not mix. Second, all you would do by adding water anyway is to dilute the mixture. This would mean a weaker scent.

Reed diffuser oils are blended in a way that makes diffusion optimal.  The added fragrance is added in very specific amounts as if too much is added, it could clog the reeds rendering the reed diffuser useless.

The reed diffuser base itself is specially blended too. Some sellers use dipropylene glycol (more commonly referred to as DPG) in their bases. DPG itself is used for cutting or thinning out fragrances. Why would you want to cut the fragrance ? Also, DPG is too thick to properly wick up the reeds.  Avoid buying reed diffuser oils from companies that use DPG as part of their formula. If in doubt- ask if they use DPG.

Yet others use alcohol in their reed diffuser base. Alcohol is highly flammable ! Also, alcohol evaporates very quickly. If used as a carrier for the fragrance oil to wick up the reeds, it would cause your oil to evaporate too quickly. That means you would be spending more money replacing oils.

Buy from a reputable company that uses quality ingredients in their products. A good reed diffuser oil is more expensive for a reason.  Cutting corners by adding water to your mixture or buying subpar oils, etc. really cost you more than you might think.
